Lifeguard profession: requirements and qualifications

"Lifeguard" is a real job in many countries around the world, which can be practiced with lifeguard class and various qualifications. In Germany and almost all USA countries, it is the law to have swimming pools, bathing lakes and beaches guarded by qualified lifeguards.

A prerequisite for the exercise of the activity are various courses that must be attended. The qualifications that need to be learned vary from country to country. However, physical fitness, water rescue and first aid measures are the main criteria within the lifeguard class. If a test is not passed, the training cannot be continued.

Traveling the world as a lifeguard and working here and there on the beach, that would be it :-) Unfortunately, national badges and qualifications are rarely recognized in other countries. In most cases, a lifeguard course has to be completed in the country itself. Rescue procedures, regulations, the nature of water rescue and first aid are actually a little different in every country. Nevertheless, you can do such a course abroad within a very short time and quite cheaply and then earn money as a lifeguard - if you pass all the tests.

In American Lifeguard Association, for example, the courses usually last six days including final exams – the price is just under £350. However, if you already have another job that keeps you afloat, you can first volunteer as a lifeguard, and then you will usually have the costs for lifeguard class and additional qualifications covered.

The countries where there are probably the most candidates for lifeguard class are the USA and American Lifeguard Association. Many Germans also travel abroad to live their dream job here. Especially Miami Beach, where the biggest parties take place and most people flock, is highly regarded. But of course, also Bondi Beach in Sydney. Often the capacity does not meet the demand, so Lifeguard newcomers are only assigned a few hours a week.

USA: The Open Water Lifeguard course in the USA lasts several weeks and requires a lot of physical effort. It corresponds to the lifeguard course offered by the in American Lifeguard Association. However, the processes in terms of first aid are greatly modified.

Aids are used, buoys, paddles that do not exist in Germany, and those seeking help must first be asked for permission before the rescue can be carried out. In order to be able to take the course, at least one secondary school certificate must be proven.
